Cathay Financial Group: When ESG creates real impact in Vietnam

Cathay Financial Group: When ESG creates real impact in Vietnam

For more than 20 years in Vietnam, Cathay Financial Group has pursued an ESG strategy centered on three pillars: Climate - Health - Empowerment. Rather than remaining on paper as corporate commitments, this strategy has been translated into concrete projects, programs, and measurable outcomes that generate meaningful value for communities and the broader economy.

The three pillars shaping Cathay's ESG strategy

In recent years, the way ESG performance is evaluated has undergone a significant shift. Rather than focusing solely on the number of initiatives a company announces, organizations and investors are increasingly emphasizing measurable outcomes that create tangible environmental and social value. At the same time, international reporting standards have evolved from recognizing corporate commitments to assessing real-world performance.

This trend is particularly evident in the financial sector. In addition to strengthening climate risk management, many financial institutions are expanding their ESG priorities to include public health and human capital development.

In response to these changes, an increasing number of financial groups have restructured their ESG strategies around three core pillars: Climate, Health, and Empowerment, replacing fragmented initiatives with a more integrated approach. Cathay Financial Group is among the organizations that have adopted this model across multiple markets, including Vietnam.

Cathay Financial Group builds its ESG strategy based on three key pillars: Climate, Health, and Empowerment.

Climate and health: two pillars making a distinct mark

Guided by its vision and mission of ""Creating Value, Enriching Life” Cathay Financial Group has built its ESG strategy around the three pillars of Climate, Health, and Empowerment. Rather than treating these as mere formal guidelines, the group embeds these pillars into all operations across its banking, insurance, and investment ecosystem in key markets.

Under its Climate pillar, Cathay Financial Group through its subsidiaries, has progressively expanded its sustainable finance portfolio across key projects throughout Vietnam.

Meanwhile, under the Health pillar, Cathay aims to protect both the physical health and financial stability of its customers.

Cathay Life Vietnam currently serves more than 500,000 customers with over 260,000 active insurance policies [1].

For clients, Cathay Insurance Vietnam emphasizes its accompanying role and social responsibility in Vietnam. During Typhoon Yagi in 2024 – one of the natural disaster events that caused severe damage, Cathay Insurance Vietnam provided compensation support to more than 50 businesses with a total value exceeding 60 billion VND, thereby demonstrating the "backing" role of non-life insurance during the most difficult times[3].

While the Climate pillar is reflected through sustainable finance initiatives with measurable outcomes, and the Health pillar is realized through insurance solutions, Empowerment best represents Cathay's long-term vision for sustainable development.

Empowerment: a silent yet enduring pillar

At Cathay, Empowerment is implemented with a focus on both internal organization and social impact. Rather than being limited to short-term CSR initiatives, it is embedded in the group's long-term human capital development strategy.

Cathay Financial Group and internal empowerment

Cathay Group views its people as the foundation of long-term growth. As a result, the group continues to invest in employee welfare, foster a diverse and inclusive workplace, and create opportunities for experienced professionals to continue contributing beyond retirement age.

These efforts have earned Cathay multiple recognitions for building a positive and sustainable working environment.

In Vietnam, Cathay Life has a network of approximately 2,400 financial consultants serving more than 500,000 customers [1].

In the life insurance industry, where service quality depends heavily on human expertise, every financial consultant serves as a key touchpoint, delivering financial solutions while fostering long-term trust between customers and the company.

This people-centric approach is how Cathay brings its philosophy, "Insurance for all, happiness for every family." into practice. The company has established a multi-tiered training system, including the PFC (Personal Finance Consultant) program for new recruits, the GTD (Getting Things Done) program for team development, and the ITD program for advanced individual training, all under the close guidance of experienced managers.

Alongside its conventional training programs, Cathay Life has introduced AI Coach to help financial consultants simulate real-world customer scenarios and recommend suitable insurance solutions. At the group level, Cathay Group has also deployed internal AI assistants while encouraging employees to develop AI-powered applications through no-code platforms.

At a time when many organizations are adopting AI primarily to reduce labor costs, Cathay has taken a different approach. The group positions AI as a tool to enhance employees' capabilities rather than replace them. This strategy reflects Cathay's empowerment philosophy and differentiates its approach to talent development from that of many industry peers.

Cathay Financial Group human stories: Empowerment extending beyond the organization

Beyond developing its internal workforce, Cathay extends its Empowerment pillar through a wide range of initiatives that support young people and vulnerable communities. These programs focus on improving financial literacy, raising ESG awareness, and strengthening community engagement, helping equip younger generations with the knowledge and skills needed to contribute to sustainable development.

In the field of school safety education, Cathay Insurance in Taiwan has implemented a school safety program across nearly 200 schools since 2012, reaching approximately 21,000 students. For university students, the program leverages AI to simulate safe driving scenarios and map out potential traffic risk spots around campuses.

Conclusion

Within Cathay Financial Group's ESG strategy in Vietnam, Empowerment serves as the pillar that connects its Climate and Health initiatives. By investing in people, from its employees to the broader community, Cathay aims to create lasting value, foster opportunities for personal growth, and enable people to make meaningful, long-term contributions to society.
