Digital technology and data: The cornerstone of Cathay United Bank's regional banking strategy
From retail digital transformation in Vietnam to cross-border corporate banking, Cathay United Bank is placing technology and data at the core of its strategy to realize its vision of becoming one of Asia’s leading financial partners.
During a working visit to the headquarters of Cathay Financial Group in Taipei, Taiwan, a delegation of Vietnamese media representatives had the opportunity to gain firsthand insight into how one of Asia’s leading financial groups is reshaping regional banking through technology, data, and a digital-first mindset. Beyond growth figures and network expansion, Cathay United Bank is pursuing a long-term strategy: building a technology-driven bank, operated by data, and scaled across borders with disciplined governance.
During the media sharing session, Mr. Benny Miao, CFA - Executive Vice President of Cathay United Bank alongside Mr. VJ Lu, Chief Executive Officer of Cathay United Bank - Ho Chi Minh City Branch, explained how Cathay views technology not merely as an operational tool, but as a strategic foundation. According to TechTimes, these insights offered a practical perspective on how an Asian bank is preparing for a new era of competition, where digital banking, data, and customer experience have become core differentiators.
Digital transformation is not just a tool, but an operating mindset
Throughout the presentation, Cathay United Bank’s leadership repeatedly emphasized that digital transformation is not simply about digitizing existing processes. Instead, it represents a comprehensive restructuring of the banking model, where data and customer experience become the central drivers of every operational decision.
This philosophy is reflected in the bank’s “One Bank - One Team - One Solution” strategy, built on the technologies platform that is consistent for the entire system. Rather than allowing each market or branch to develop separate systems, Cathay has adopted a shared digital architecture that enables the bank to operate as a cross-border institution - seamlessly connecting technology, data, and talent across East Asia and Southeast Asia.
At the infrastructure level, Cathay has developed centralized data platforms, standardized IT architecture, and unified management models, enabling customer data, transaction information, and risk analytics models to be securely shared across markets. This approach not only shortens product deployment timelines, but also allows successful initiatives in one country to be rapidly replicated in others.
According to Cathay’s leadership, this “one platform - multiple markets” approach enables the bank to maintain consistency in governance while remaining flexible enough to adapt to local regulations and customer behaviors in each country. As banking operations become increasingly regional and global, this foundation is considered critical for Cathay United Bank to scale sustainably while maintaining service quality and data-driven risk management capabilities.
Retail Digital Banking: Vietnam as a key market
One of the most notable technology initiatives shared by Cathay United Bank’s leadership was its consumer digital banking model in Vietnam - a market viewed as a real-world testing ground for Cathay’s regional data-driven digital capabilities. Officially launched in March 2024, the CUB Vietnam application is not merely a digital banking product, but a clear demonstration of how Cathay transforms data and technology into simple, efficient, and scalable financial experiences.
Through the CUB Vietnam platform, the entire consumer lending journey has been fully digitized - from registration and electronic identity verification (eKYC) to application assessment, credit approval, and disbursement. Instead of relying on lengthy manual processes, the system utilizes data analytics models and multidimensional credit scoring algorithms to process applications almost in real time. As a result, users can complete the loan process within minutes while the bank continues to maintain strict risk management standards
For retail lending products, the CUB Vietnam application, operated by Cathay United Bank Ho Chi Minh City Branch (CUBHCM), provides consumer loan packages without requiring income verification. Customers can register once for multiple loans with credit limits of up to VND 40 million and interest rates starting from 1.91% per month. Notably, the approved credit limit can remain valid for up to five years. Once customers receive credit approval, they can request disbursement for subsequent withdrawals without needing to resubmit loan applications. In addition to individual lending products, CUBHCM also offers preferential loan packages specifically designed for employees of corporate partners.
After just over one year of operation, CUB Vietnam recorded 5.7 million downloads and 790,000 registered users, becoming one of Vietnam’s fastest-growing digital banking applications. More importantly, the platform has received multiple international awards related to data analytics, customer experience, and digital transformation - further reinforcing the central role of technology in Cathay United Bank’s long-term growth strategy in Vietnam, where data, AI, and local market understanding are combined to build an effective and sustainable digital banking model.
Data and technology in cross-border corporate banking
Beyond retail banking, technology also plays a critical role in corporate banking and cross-border finance. Cathay United Bank leverages digital platforms to connect cash management, trade finance, foreign exchange, and derivatives services across financial centers including Taipei, Ho Chi Minh City, Singapore, and Hong Kong.
Digitalized processes and integrated data systems enable Cathay to strengthen risk management, credit pricing, and syndicated loan execution capabilities. In 2025, the Ho Chi Minh City Branch participated in multiple large-scale syndicated loan transactions as both arranger and bookrunner.
Mr. VJ Lu emphasized
Technology enables us not only to serve faster, but also with greater transparency and accuracy. This is especially important for multinational corporations, where every financial decision is closely tied to risk management.
Technology as the foundation for “Regional banking’s vision”
From a strategic perspective, Cathay United Bank’s leadership emphasized that technology is not only about operational efficiency, but also a key enabler for market expansion and service differentiation. Investments in digital platforms, data infrastructure, and online banking models allow Cathay to maintain strong regulatory compliance while remaining agile enough to adapt to the unique characteristics of each market.
As regional banking competition intensifies, Cathay United Bank’s decision to place digital transformation and data at the center of its strategy demonstrates that its ambition to become “Asia’s Best Financial Partner” is not merely a slogan, but a vision being realized through tangible technology platforms and measurable results.
