Cathay Financial Group: What is its long-term strategic vision for the Vietnamese financial market?

If a financial group were compared to a living organism, capital would be the bloodstream that keeps it moving, trust would be its lifeblood, while technology and ESG would represent its ability to adapt through periods of uncertainty.

During a visit to the headquarters of Cathay Financial Group in Taipei, one philosophy consistently surfaced throughout conversations with executives and employees alike: Cathay does not prioritize rapid expansion, but instead focuses on sustainable and well directed growth, especially in key markets such as Vietnam.

Vietnam is undergoing a significant transformation. As digital banking becomes mainstream, data protection regulations grow increasingly stringent, and ESG shifts from an optional consideration to a prerequisite for accessing international capital flows, Cathay’s direction stands out through consistency and patience. Rather than emphasizing visibility, the group spent years quietly building a solid foundation.

Only after that groundwork was established did Cathay begin accelerating through a structured strategy: using banking as its core engine, prioritizing domestic enterprises, leveraging digitalization as a growth driver, and positioning ESG as its long term development framework.

A perspective from Taipei

With total assets reaching USD 468 billion and a customer base of more than 15 million people in Taiwan, representing over half the population, Cathay no longer needs to prove its scale. The greater challenge today lies in how to manage that scale responsibly.

According to Ms. Ya-Jou Chang, Senior Vice President of the Group, digital transformation and ESG are not treated as separate initiatives, but are deeply integrated into the organization’s operational structure. ESG in particular is governed through a transparent framework with measurable targets, including the use of 100% renewable energy in Taiwan by 2030 and achieving net zero emissions by 2050.

Technology plays a practical role in this roadmap. Through data standardization and close monitoring of outcomes, Cathay aims to quantify sustainability, particularly in green finance, rather than limiting it to reporting metrics or public statements.

Cathay United Bank: A digital growth engine supporting Vietnamese businesses

In Vietnam, Cathay United Bank serves as a key growth engine. Unlike many foreign banks that primarily focus on foreign direct investment enterprises, Cathay has chosen a different path by partnering with Vietnamese businesses, especially those seeking to expand internationally.

CUB Vietnam’s strategy centers around two major pillars.

The first is corporate banking, with a focus on infrastructure, renewable energy, logistics, and high tech manufacturing. The bank has become an active participant in syndicated loans, helping arrange large scale financing for leading Vietnamese private enterprises.

The second is digital consumer finance. The CUBE Vietnam app has surpassed 5.7 million downloads and offers a fully digital loan application process. By integrating eKYC, credit data, and AI technology, customers can complete procedures and receive disbursement quickly without visiting a branch.

Mr. Joe Liang, Chief Data and Analytics Officer at CUB, described data as a long term asset. Beyond simply moving services online, the bank is building partnerships with platforms such as Zalo and Thế Giới Di Động to better understand customer behavior and provide financial services where customers spend the most time.

Insurance: A multi layer protection framework

Alongside banking, Cathay’s insurance operations form a strong protective layer within its ecosystem in Vietnam, reflecting the group’s “One Brand, One Cathay” philosophy.

Cathay Life Vietnam: Stable growth with a long term mindset

After 17 years in the market, Cathay Life Vietnam remains committed to steady and disciplined growth rather than rapid expansion. The company focuses on building a professional advisory workforce of around 2,400 personnel and a nationwide network of 120 business locations.

Looking toward 2030, Ms. Theresa Lin, Executive Vice President of Cathay Life, noted that population aging and climate related risks are reshaping customer expectations. Instead of only responding after incidents occur, insurance is increasingly expected to support health management and long term financial planning.

Cathay Life has already introduced the AI Coach platform in Taiwan as a core solution for advisor training and professional development. Through technology, advisors can build insurance and financial solutions tailored to each stage of a customer’s life. In the future, Cathay Life also plans to gradually introduce these applications into Vietnam, helping insurance become more practical and relevant in customers’ daily financial decisions.

Cathay Insurance Vietnam: Stability during times of disruption

With a compound annual growth rate exceeding 20%, Cathay Insurance Vietnam places strong emphasis on risk prevention. This role became especially clear after Super Typhoon Yagi in 2024, when the company paid more than VND 60 billion in compensation to affected businesses.

Events like these demonstrate the value of non life insurance not merely as a financial product, but as a stabilizing force for the economy during unexpected disruptions.

Turning ESG and green finance into practice

Cathay has committed more than USD 100 million to green finance projects in Vietnam, including the BIM wind power project in Ninh Thuận in partnership with the Asian Development Bank.

For startups and small businesses undergoing green transition, Cathay recognizes the challenges associated with capital access. A “capital bridge” model is currently under consideration in coordination with local authorities, similar to credit guarantee mechanisms used in Taiwan. According to Mr. Michael Wen, Executive Vice President of CUB, such mechanisms could help share risks and improve banks’ ability to support smaller enterprises.

ESG is also embedded within Cathay’s office real estate strategy. The group views office buildings not only as commercial assets, but also as sustainable spaces. Offices designed according to LEED or BERS standards can reduce energy consumption by up to 40%, while also providing emissions data that tenants can use for their own ESG reporting.

Looking ahead

From Taipei’s perspective, Cathay’s strategy in Vietnam is not a short term campaign, but a long standing commitment. The group’s priority is not rapid capital recovery, but preserving value and adaptability over the coming decades.

As Vietnam’s financial market continues to mature, Cathay’s approach offers a broader perspective on sustainable growth: using technology to remove barriers and improve efficiency, using data to guide decision making, and treating ESG as a shared development framework rather than a marketing label. It may not be the loudest strategy in the market, but it is one designed to endure over the long term.
